Useful for playing guitar, at least

Supposedly, many cartoon characters have four fingers because it's easier to animate, and it looks more right in some way. The Japanese, of course, have found ways to make their more-realistic five-fingered animated characters not have this same problem.

Some manga artists have taken this one step further.
